Maths Mate Term 3 Sheet 3 Q. 24

Predict: I predict this will be about finding the value of a certain number of beads altogether.

READ: Each bead has a value according to its color. The value of the first 3 strings are given. What is the value of the last string?

Clarify: I had nothing to clarify.

Big Question: What is the value of the last string?

Tool: Guess, check and improve.

Solve: I started by giving a value to each of the beads. I tried the dark one as 2, the lighter one as 5 and the white one as 6. I added the first string and it gave me 22, as given. Then 21 as given and 16 as given. I added the last string and it gave me 23.

Maths Mate Term 3 Sheet 2 Q. 23

Predict: I predict this is about solving a crossword, making sure each number fits into place.

Read: Fill in the crossword puzzle using the following numbers: 3 digits: 489, 789, 949 4 digits: 3726, 4790, 5768, 6728 5 digits: 54 842

Clarify: I had nothing to clarify.

BIG Question: How do you complete the crossword puzzle?

Mathematician’s Toolbox: Guess, check and improve.

Answer:

layla's maths

Solve: First I started by firguring out wher 54 842 went. I added 8 and 9 to the for after 5. Under the 9, I put 4 then 9. Beside that 9, 4 and 7 was before it and 0 was after it. Under the 7 was 8 and 9. Under the 4 was 2. before the 2, was 6 then 7. Above the six was 2 then 7 then 3. On one side of the 7 was five and the other side was 6. That is how I solved that problem.

Conducting a Science Experiment (part 2) (UNFINISHED)

Today, we went to the science lab and we were setting up our anti-rusting experiments. My partner and I didn’t set ours up but we had fun watching everyone else.

If you want to know more about the experiments, please go to my other post: http://layla2014.global2.vic.edu.au/2014/06/17/conducting-a-science-experiment/

For my experiment, I predict that the nail that will be painted, will have hardly any rust on it because of the paint. The nail without paint will have rust on it, depending on what type of nail it is. (I prefer iron nails)

We all had to make POE charts. (predict, observe, explain) This is my chart:

Text Type: Narrative (Julie’s Sacrifice)

It was a peaceful day at school and Julie and Nicola were working on their project for maths. The lunch bell had rung and they both decided to go check out the old school house behind the main building. Julie and Nicola were in yr. 7 at St. Jane’s College which was an all girls college. They loved it there but the old building was a bit suspicious to the girls.

They went to the old school house and the door freakishly but surely opened on it’s own. Julie already wanted to go back to the school yard but Nicola said no. They went inside and the door shut, locking the girls inside. Julie screamed, trying to open the door from all angles but it wouldn’t budge. The girls were locked in for good.

Nicola was walking up the stairs, shivered and turned around, to see Julie just sitting at the door, shivering and scared. Nicola asked herself, is she okay? She ignored it and continued upstairs. Julie had remembered this school house before she was a ghost. No one knew she was a ghost but she really wanted to go back in time, to see old friends again.

“AHHH!” Nicola screamed. Julie ran upstairs, checking every room. Nicola was nowhere to be seen. Julie slid down the wall, sitting on the wooden floors. She started crying into her hands. Nicola was gone, forever. She couldn’t bare losing anymore friends.

Julie could see all the undead and she kept on hearing screams from downstairs. She ran into the kitchen to see Nicola as a ghost. Something was torchuring her. Julie screamed ‘NO!’ as she sacrificed her own life for Nicola’s.

“Julie!” Nicola cried, as Julie said that she had to sacrifice herself for Nicola. Julie was fading away and Nicola was crying for ages, until it was final bell. She was a ghost now so she knew how to escape. Now knowing her best friend was a ghost, she was willing to live for another hundred years or so, willing to sacrifice herself for others.

BTN: Chocolate

Three facts that I learnt are that cocoa was first used in Central America, as currency, a gift for the gods and a nice drink. A Spanish explorer used this drink in Spain and then eventually, posh people in Europe were drinking it. I also learnt that the first person to make chocolate was also posh. He added sugar and ground cocoa to it to make chocolate. I also found that chocolate is now made differently in our factories and no one can resist chocolate.

I understand that the way we make now is way better than back then. It’s way tastier. I also understand that chocolate was dated back to when Aztecs were around. A question I’m left with is how did chocolate get it’s yummy taste?

Maths Mate Term 3 Sheet 1 Problem 22

Predict: I predict this problem will involve using our estimation skills

Read: The sum of two consecutive whole numbers is 97. What are the two numbers?

Clarify: I had nothing to clarify.

Mathematicians tool box: I used work backwards.

Big Question: Which two consecutive whole numbers are the sum of 97?

Solve: I first started by saying, what is half of 90? It was 45. I doubled that to give me 90 and then added 3 to one 45 and 4 to the other. It was 49 and 48. I added them together and it gave me 97.
